Anne Bowler teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on classical and contemporary sociological theory and the sociology of  art and culture. She received her Ph.D. from the New School for Social Research. Her research interests continue in the areas of the sociology of art and aesthetic-cultural theory. Publications include articles on asylum art, theory and method in the sociology of art, the historical avant-garde, and art and politics. She is currently working on a book on the sociology of art.

 

She is an active member of the Culture Section of the American Sociological Association where she has served as Chair of the Committee for Best Article, Council Member, Co-organizer of the Theory and Culture Network and Nominations Committee Member. She is the U.S. representative of the European Society for the Sociology of Art and Design (ESSAD) based at the Università di Urbina, Italy. She holds a secondary appointment in the Women’s Studies Interdisciplinary Program at the University of Delaware and is a past member of Executive Committee of the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture.
